Set in south-central Kansas in the 1950s and 60s, WON’T BE LONG NOW tells the story of Billie, who has never known how to define what makes her different from her peers. Bright but awkward, and baffled by the ease with which others interact, Billie lives with a constant, nagging voice that insists she’s doing everything wrong. No one can fathom how Billie, the “odd-wad,” sees the world—the piercing moments of beauty and heartache she experiences, her uncompromising honesty and lack of guile. Although it seems the 1960s are ushering in a new era of protest and change, Billie’s own prospects remain stagnant. Then tragedy engulfs the family, prompting revelations, questions, and understanding, and Billie finds a way, at last, to reconcile her desire for love with her need for acceptance, just as she is.
